I hope that Chrysler LLC pushes forward with diesels across the entire product line. I think a major hurdle in this country is the perception of diesels as smoky and smelly. Just one encounter behind a diesel bus 20 years ago will leave an indelible mark in anyone's mind.

One telling response on the blog was "Diesels still stink! I can't have my vents on when following them. They still nauseate. Even the new ones!", which is typical of the perception of diesel vehicles in this country. The premium you pay for a diesel, both initial price, and higher fuel cost, would be a lot easier to swallow, if the miles per gallon is really 40 or 50. Burning biodiesel would be a plus.

I'm not sure why we are "diesel adverse" in this country, maybe poor marketing on the part of the major manufacturers. I saw one statistic that 70% of luxury sedans in Europe are diesel.

Then you look at the concept Audi R8 V12 TDI LeMans up top, thats a V-12 diesel. Beautiful design, who would guess that it has a diesel engine? The same diesel that will come in Audi's Q7 SUV at the end of the year.

Specs:
That big 6.0-liter engine generates a whopping 500 HP and (wait for it) an astonishing 757.5 lb-ft of torque. That means the new Q7 has a 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) time of just 5.5 seconds. On average, it requires just 11.9 liters of fuel per 100 km -- a figure translating to roughly 19.77 MPG.

Maybe if NASCAR started running diesels, we could get more enthusiasm for the oil burners?
