Catalytic converters were widely used in the first generation of wood stoves that met the Washington State wood stove regulations, which probably was about 25 years ago. They worked, but they were finicky and easy to ruin or clog unless you were careful about what you burned and how you burned it (in which case, you wouldn't have much of a smoke problem anyway). I don't know if they're still used. The newer "clean air" wood stoves don't use catalytic converters. They're fairly careful designs that minimize smoke and improve efficiency even without a catalytic converter. The two main tricks are that the firebox is lined with firebrick to reflect heat back onto the burning wood, and then there's some system for mixing fresh hot air with the smoke and gases above the fire to burn what would otherwise go up the chimney. I've seen nice ones that work really well, producing lots of heat with little wood and no smoke, but for $2000+ they ought to.
