It's all about big business these days. It's not just the oil companies, but the biggest companies in every area -- agriculture, pharmaceuticals, software, and all forms of energy -- that control the government now. They used to fight "government regulations" until they realized that they can use the FDA, EPA, BLM, CPSC, &c. &c. to lock out any competition so that we're forced to buy their products. Even the oil companies have decided they like Al Gore now that they can use him to get the taxpayers to pay them to not pump the oil that they might not really have anyway.

The utility companies want us to heat with natural gas and electricity so we have to buy it from them. On a particularly paranoid day, I might also imagine that the government likes it that way so that if we fall out of line they can just "cut off our power" and we'll be helpless. From the news stories I see, it's an unmitigated disaster when people are "without power". If your house is cold and dark, you might be more likely to herd your family onto that FEMA bus to go to official refugee camp / relief center.
