the 87 w-150 has a towing weight of 3500 pounds unless it has the 3.55 or 3.91 gears. most of these trucks have 3.21 gears. my 87 prospector package w-150 even has 3.21 gears. if it is a w-150 it will have either a chrysler 8 1/4 or chrysler 9 1/4 rear not a dana 44. if it has an 8 1/4 rear dont tow alot with it ( this was the rear the dakotas tore up)I dont mind towing my 74 dart on a 20 ft trailer with it but it is underpowered even for that. If it is a w-250 you should be alright, in that you will find 3.54 or 4.10 gears in a dana 60 or 3.91 gears in a chrysler 9 1/4. hope this helps. if it is a 318 you should consider a 360.
