For several years in about that era, 1/2 tons needed catalytic converters. So the Big Three came out with 5/8 tons. Called 150 as opposed to the 1/2t 100s. Later, it didn't matter.

I wonder if California had 150s, without cats, while the rest of the country had 100s also without cats?

The VIN might have a two digit model number, 15 or 10?
