When a friend and I travelled up to Alaska a number of years ago, we were asked the same thing by an Alaska State Trooper.
When we told him we were planning to drive up the ALCAN to Fairbanks, he asked us if we had a rifle or pistol. When we said "No" he said "Why not?"
He was concerned that we might encounter a bear, and not be able to defend ourselves. So we went and bought a rifle and some ammo, but didn't need it, thankfully.
