I went back and looked at the specs of all the trolleys we'd found and it turns out that both "Chance" trolleys (that's the brand name of the ones that look the best) have diesels, but one has the cat 3208 and the other has a Cummins. Somehow I missed the Cummins one when I first looked at the choices. If nothing else, that tells me it would be an easy swap to put a Cummins in if need be. We've made an offer on the Cat unit, but if that doesn't work out, we'll try for the similar one with the Cummins. The advantages of the one with the Cat are that it's freshly painted in colors that will work for us, and it has a wheelchair lift. Mechanically, however, I'd rather have a Cummins.

I think the concerns about fumes and noise are important, especially since we like to have it be "open air" in the summer (our old trolley has side-facing bench seats with no sides at all on it). It turns out the gassers are 454s, not 427s (I don't know where I got the 427), not that it matters much. The bodies aren't quite as fancy, but there are some that would still be fine.

The thing that makes me nervous about it all is not being able to check them out in person. There's a bus dealer in Tacoma WA, and one in Henderson NV, but neither of them has any trolleys like we need right now. They all seem to be on the east coast or Florida. One is in the midwest, but it's at the high end of our price range. I'd feel a lot better about it if I could see (and hear and smell) it running before we buy it.

The biodiesel suggestion is a good idea to cut down on the fumes and maybe have some good P.R., but there's only one fuel jobber in the area and he's not carrying biodiesel yet. Personally, I'd like to run it on hog fuel, since we sure have plenty of trees, but they don't seem to make an engine that will do that yet.
