There are four circuits to carburetor operation: idling, part throttle, acceleration, and wide open throttle. I’ll assume that you open the throttle slowly with this symptom. You have 4 possibilities:

• Float set to low
• Incorrect idle adjustment screw setting (low speed circuit air screw) – Adjustment - Seat the screw, back out 1 & ½ turns for an initial adjustment. From that point turn the screw clockwise until the engine just starts to slow down, turn counter clockwise slowly until engine speeds up to normal idle, mark, turn the screw counter clockwise and count the turns until the engine begins to slow, turn screw clockwise slowly until engine returns to normal idle, mark, then turn screw clockwise to center of the two marks. I’ve had very good performance with this method.
• Plugged low circuit air passage. Although the carb may have been rebuilt, unless all plugs were removed and passages cleaned, you have the possibility of rust/oxidation becoming lose and plugging the passage. Test – With the air cleaner off by spraying carb cleaner (in spray can w/plastic tube) down the air passage located on the right side of the carb when looking down it from the passenger side. If the passage is clear, the engine will slow and idle rough for a few seconds.
• If it occurs only when you open the throttle fast (acceleration circuit), then the acceleration pump may need to be adjusted for quicker activation, otherwise you can eliminate this as a possibility. The main metering system provides fuel for all speed ranges. If you live 3,000 feet or higher, you may find you’ll need a leaner main metering jet.

My experience has been that it lies with the low speed circuit, float adjustment or an air leak (mounting/intake manifold gasket). If you still have a problem after doing the above, post a new post at top of forum, you may need to check the float level.
