The literature that came with the All-Trac (Later turned to Lock-rite) describes a process for marking the adjusters and the bearing caps, and then getting it back to that same spot. I followed the process years ago and it seemed to work.
I think someone who was not knowledgable in the setting of the lash would cause more problems trying to get it adjusted right than to simply put it back where it was and accept that. I suspect that is why All-Trac included that procedure in their instructions, to make the installation accessable to a wider cross section of owners.
To each his own I guess.
