Ron, sounds like you had the same blair spotweld cutter I did?? It has a little point in the center that has a spring behind it to hold tension on it, and the cutter is 3/8 around and double ended?? I bought one of those last fall,, drilled a WHOLE 1965 plymouth belvedere apart for the rust free body panels. I took the whole car apart at the seams just like the factory put it together,, A LOT of work, but panned out in the end!! I had the same problem with the cutter running out even after I used the center punch, I found out it does not run off if you drill a small pilot hole first,,(the guy I bought it from told me this) I think it was a 7/32 drill bit I used or maybe it was a 3/32 either way it was small. It was a extra step, but in the end it saved my tips and probably went just as fast.

In the picture is the cowl firewall section, probaly at least 200 spot welds just in that piece alone! I never counted but I would say there was a good 1000-1500 (atleast) spotwelds and plug welds holding the car together!!

When I went to the body shop supply place where I bought the spot weld cutter to buy more tips the guy asked me what I was using all the tips on?? I told him I am drilling apart a whole car for the panels, floor boards ect,, then he tells me that if he knew that thats what I was going to be doing he would have sold me the more industral one that the body shops use last long and is faster,, and the one he sold me is more for weekend warriors and backyard mechanics! Had I known that I would have been money ahead to buy the better one first,, especially after I bought more refills. But they were sold out of the better ones at the time so I dont even know what they look like yet?

Anyways I would be interested to find out what the new spotweld cutter you have is?? And how it works out,, since I plan to cut a few more cars apart this spring for panels, since the guys on ebay went nuts for the rust free panels! All the panels went east of the mississippi to the rust belt!

Matt
