Remove the little pipe plug over #6 cylinder, and insert the deep hole rod on the dial caliper. Turn engine over by hand- use the crank and/or grab the fan blades. You'll want to get the minimum reading on the caliper, and compare to the timing marks. My D-40 motor has four marks, two wide apart, two close together in the middle between them. Of the two close ones, one is TDC, the other .010 advanced, or about two degrees. I guess. My guess is that the two farthest were 10btdc, and 8 atdc. So I'm set at the 10 btdc.
