I have a 2001 CTD with the 6 speed (high output engine) and 3.55 gears. I haven't towed a lot (yet), but I did tow a very loaded two horse trailer 400 miles on mostly interstate roads.
I did not have a problem with the 3.55 gears as the H.O. Cummins has 500 ft lbs of torque stock, but it was on rather level terrain.
At times I could not tell I had a trailer, as the diesel is so strong.
The exhaust brake is great, one of the best additions I have made. And, from what my trucker friends tell me, is almost a must in hills and mountain terrain.
Several brands are available, PAC, BANKS and JACOBS. I got a new Jacobs - made for Mopar- on E-bay from a dealer in Texas.
Until recently, with the (06-07?)newest model Dodges, you could not add an exhaust brake to an automatic trans truck.
