I have a '98 12v with automatic that I had built up with a BD valve body and Torque convertor. The 12 valve is great because you can do simple mechanical things to it and really build lots of power and torque. But I think most will agree the 6 speed is a better transmission for towing a lot of weight. If you watch the EGTs and keep it out of overdrive on hills you might be fine. But the 6 speed will respond better to an exhaust brake if you intend to use one. I use my '98 to plow snow and it's great with the auto. My '06 has a 6 speed and I like the 6 speed lot better. Optimum, in my opinion, would be a '98 12 valve, then put a 6 speed in it with an exhaust brake. Also, be aware that the 12v engines with autos came from the factory with about 30 less hp and also with less torque, in an effort to save the transmission from destruction. JH
