It's my understanding that some of the logging roads that cross the border in North Idaho are still un-gated and un-guarded. A couple years ago a guy I knew went for a drive to visit some buddies in Canada and took the no-hassle route without anybody questioning him. I haven't been anywhere near the border since all the 9/11 security hoopla, so I can't say for sure what the situation is with the logging roads these days.
Is there any chance that the truck you're buying was built in Canada? I've read on this forum that there's no hassle or duty to bring a Canadian truck into the US if it was originally made in the US, which seems to be the case with a lot of them.
