That's pretty funny. I had a packrat in the basement once years ago. Saw him several times and he set off a rat trap a couple times but never caught him. Finally spotted him in a crack between walls where I could get to him and got him point blank with the kids BB gun. The good part about this story is I am sending it to my wife since she seems to think we are the only ones that get mice in the house in winter. Glad you got him out of the house but too bad he cost you a stove.
BTW, I hate rats (mice too) with a passion also and can imagine the shock of seeing that guy poke his head out. You would have heard me yell all the way to your place.=)
