Marius touched on the downside of the gasification converted vehicles. What I remember from reading about occupied France was that people recalled that because the process was extremely low in compression people riding in buses sometimes had to get out and help push the bus uphill. I think I'll pass on pushing my W300M over a speed bump let along the Rockies. Another alternate fuel source was some sort of natural gas that was carried in a giant bladder on the roof of a bus, for example.

There's an old movie called the Longest 100 Miles about guerillas on the run from the Japanese on Luzon. The bus they were riding in had a big cooker mounted on the rear with a Filipino working a lever back and forth.

Doug McClure was in the movie. I don't think it's ever been put on VHS or DVD.
