I have the hand pump that fits on the top of the five gallon oil bucket. It is so much easier than all the other methods mentioned in this thread.

If we always drove on the street, we would follow a "soccer mom" maintenance schedule and not have to worry about filling the gear boxes. In fact, we probably would never even check them.

BUT... Most of us take our trucks through water or mud. The vents and seals let some bad stuff into the gears boxes. This means we should drain and refill them several times a year. If it's easy, it happens. If it's not so easy - well you know.

Having the tools and equipment to perform maintenance easily is the best way to keep these great old trucks running.
