Years ago, I had a housing straightened and reinforced at Summer's Brother's in CA. They do most of the rear-end work for the big name drag guys.

When I picked it up, I spent a fair amount of time chatting with one of the guys about how they do the work. He took me back into the shop and showed me...

Bottom line, they jig every housing before the weld them. They then check the housings to make sure that they're true and if they're not, they straighten them.

He told me that unless you stress the housing, there is no way to weld it without it warping...

If I remember correctly, (been 20 years) the jig was a large bar that fit from one side of the housing, through the tubes and out the other side. It must have had flanges that fit on the ends of the tubes (can't remember...) They then torqued the shaft (somehow) to put stress on the housing prior to working on it...

My memory is pretty fuzzy so it might be worth a call to a rear-end shop to ask them how they do it...

Dredged up from the murky sludge in the bottom of my brain....

Hope it helps!

Steve
