I used epoxy plumbing putty on a similar hole. It was where the body had rubbed through a side-tank. I pried the body away so it wouldn't rub any more and patched it with the epoxy putty and it's held for 2 years now. I have not had good luck with JB weld on anything. Compared to other epoxies, it seems to go bad quickly and be more finicky about getting an exact mix. I like Titan Super-Weld a lot better for a metal-filled epoxy. It sounds like JB did the job for you, though. I think the lesson from this is that a catalyzed epoxy is more gas-resistant than any 1-part paint, even POR15. It would be interesting to know what Re-Nu uses. A thoroughly cleaning is probably a big part of their secret, but I suspect they use a catalyzed epoxy coating as well.
