The cleanest swap would be using an NP420 from a PW. The only items you need are the bell housing, transmission, PTO, and transmission floor cover from a C4 or later PW. If you're good and figuring and welding, you can use your current floor cover by cutting a circle to reposition the shift lever/tower port. If you use an M37 NP420, then you will need to use the TC lever mount/shaft, and probably the M37 PTO since the M37 uses a different cluster gear or countershaft than the PW NP420.

Until you get all the parts to convert, a possible cheap fix of your sliding gear transmission shift slop is Ebay item: 160193711348 assuming that is the only worn part. This is a NOS shift lever for the WC 3/4 up-to the C3 model PW that uses the sliding gear transmission. I just bought one - $10. One bid on it, 1 day and a few hours left. To patch an old one by a machinist because it really can’t be fixed (hardness) would at a minimum cost $60, so you may want to keep that in mind for a maximum bid. Don’t know if seller has any more left.
