I have a personal AR-15 (civvie M-4) that was built by Rock River Arms for the FBI hostage rescue team. I've put at least 2000 rounds through it with no problems. Usally 300-500 rounds at a time between cleanings. I love the rifle. It is the perfect "all-around" rifle in my opinion. Even My wife loves shooting it.
That said, I've heard Larry Vickers speak about the HK416 that he helped design. If I had the chance to swap out the M-4 upper for a HK416, I would do so in 1/2 a heartbeat.
At a range of 300 yards I can hit a 8"x10" steel plate with open sights from a sitting position just about everytime. It's not the rifles fault when I miss, it's mine. Oh, and I can personally attest that a 5.56 MM will completely penetrate 7/16 diamond plate steel at that distance, and it will breech a cinder block (un-reinforced) wall.
I've owned a FN L1A1 wich is a .308 caliber rifle, and I liked it fine, just not a much as the M-4. The M-4 has almost no recoil because of the buffer, and you can hump it all day with a full combat load of ammo without getting worn out. Plus, you can mount a M203 40MM grenade launcher under the M-4. LOL!!!
I've never fired a M-14 personally. My dad had one in the Army and he loved it also. I had my cherry popped by the M16A2 so I guess I'm biased.
