I rebuilt mine, and along with a repair of the shift lever ball which caused it too be "sloppy". I am not sure if that is what you are experiencing with it being loose.
I also needed two gears, one I got from VPW, the other was the big cluster gear, from Alretta Truck parts.
For the shift lever, the slot in the steel ball at its base experiences wear and can become round rather than rectangular. This slot can be restored by someone who is very skilled with a mig welder. The bad one was on top in the picture, the better one is on the bottom. I had both repaired.
