It depends on what your property is like. I've had a certain amount of complaints about my rigs wherever I lived, and I've read the laws about such things, and the gist of it is usually that if it's not visible from the street or anybody else's property, it's okay. So, the main thing is to get along with your immediate neighbors and then put up a fence or bushes so the new people who just moved to your beautiful area to escape all the hassles of the city won't see it and demand that the government hassle you to get rid of your ugly stuff that they somehow missed when the real estate agent was showing them around. Once things get too gentrified, it's hopeless, however, and then the only option is to either build a big shed and keep everything indoors or move. Personally, I think those "camo" tarps stand out like a sore thumb. Any old OD army canvas seems harder to see. Plus, if you have too much camo stuff, then the new people who just moved there from the city will also think you're some kind of survivalist and they'll be even more scared of you. Especially when they hear you shooting. I had one lady who thought my air compressor was some kind of terroristic bomb.

Most of the time, a combination of a 6' high board fence, and being friendly with your neighbors, does a world of good as far as keeping down the complaints. But if somebody's determined to make your life miserable, then you need to find out exactly what the law says. Perhaps there's no law at all and you can tell them to go suck eggs. Or perhaps the law is so vague ("unsightly material..." that any lawyer will tell you it's unenforceable. More likely there will be some specific limits on the total number of vehicles allowed, number of unlicensed vehicles allowed, quantities and types of materials that can be stored in the open, etc. It may well be that what you have fits within the limits even if somebody thinks it's ugly.

Although I have a lot of stuff, I actually do want to keep my place looking fairly nice because it's a beautiful meadow and woods up in the mountains with a big creek running through the middle. I keep all the trucks in one compact area, keep the tires in the trees, both to keep them out of sight and to keep the sunlight from deteriorating them, and put OD tarps over piles of lumber and miscellaneous machinery. It's amazing what a difference color makes. From the public road, anything with an OD tarp on it is hard to spot unless you're looking, but a blue tarp or any spot of red, yellow, or orange paint on anything jumps right out.
