The 383 is NOT a small block and uses a different
bell housing, sharing the same one as the 350, 361,
383, 400, 413, 426 and 440. The 383 is a shorter stroke
than the 318 and 360 and in my humble opinion, makes
a poor truck motor because of the short stroke.
The 400 is the same short stroke as are the 361 and
the obscure 350. If you switch to the "B/RB" engines, think 413 or 440
as long stroke is torque and there is no substitute
for cubic inches other than cubic money.
