Electricians use a woven mesh made of standed wire to snare and pull cables through conduit, etc.
Take the broken end to an electrical supply shop, and see if they can find one of these pullers that will work on it. If it will grip and pull the end you have out, it ought to work in the truck, unless it is broken off too close to the pumpkin.
Be sure and clean the broken axle first, so you don't soil their puller in case it doesn;t work.
