Theres always a debate over gear ratios, 4.89's or 5.83's. I have different trucks with the different gears, you know what the difference is? Slow and slower. Honestly, these trucks are not built to be highway vehicles. You drive them into town and get supplies or whatever, maby cruise to your favorite fishing hole, or head on a picnic with your princess up in the hills. As I have recently discovered, even with the 4.89's, trips over long distances are hard on equipment. I know people do it all the time and I myself will one day travel across the country in a PW, but on the backroads where the truck is in it's natural element.
I think the very nature of these trucks say "Slow down partner, lets just mosey!"
If you really want a truck for highway use I think you will need to get into the 4.10 range and possibly a overdrive. Dont forget you have to stop also so disc brakes are a must for safety's sake. (Not you, your driving a tank, I'm talking about the little kids in the econobox in front of you that just stopped quick to avoid hitting the dog that ran out in the road!)
I drive my '67 W-200 into work (89 mi one way) three times a week (24 hr shifts). It has 4.10's and I still think it would be nice to have another gear.
In short, I think the real driving difference between 4.89's and 5.83's is minimal and the "Highway performance" thing is hyped up.
These trucks are hard to steer, underpowered, rough riding and SLOW! Once you get past that, you will understand that is why many of us love them so mutch.
These rigs put the T back in Truck.
