Ken, I have no experience with the older stright sixes, but to answer your specific question, YES, you can get aftermarket electronic chokes that will work on almost everything. They cost between $20-40.00 for a kit.
If your intake does not have a heat riser for anything else except for telling your choke to open, then you should have no cold weather drivability issues.
