Thanks. I drilled a hole at the end of each crack, veed it out with an angle grinder and brazed it up. Theoretically the brazing should run down into the crack and hold it together without the vee, but on old cracks that have gotten rust and soot in them, that seems optimistic. I will have to drill out the hole for the heat riser and grind the gasket surface flat since it has brazing on it now. I still haven't gotten the bolt stubs out. I've tried heat and kroil. May have to drill them now. I'll get them red hot to anneal them first.

I'm not sure what you mean that it will work if 1/4" off. I was under the impression that the right way to do it is to align both parts against a flat surface or bolt them to the block temporarily, then tighten the bolts that hold the two parts together, and then take the assembled unit to the machine shop and have the block surfaces ground flat as one unit. Is that not necessary?
