I had a CJ7 that would do the exact same thing that you have described. The backfire was equivelent to a shotgun blast and it would usually do it in a crowded parking lot causing several people to duck or jump out of there skins. In fact, that old jeep decided to backfire one time when I got pulled over and just as the cop was walking up to my jeep....needless to say, I thought that I was gonna get shot.
Anyways, I never had the backfire problem again after I got the cracked exhaust manifold replaced. Seems I remember that having something to do with the jeep backfiring.
