Backfire

Hello,

I have a 1952 Dodge M37 with a flathead six. Its pretty much a stock engine, except for a 12 volt electronic ignition and electric fuel pump.

I think I have the engine timed right and my spark plugs look normal.

Here’s my problem: after running hard (50 to 55mph) for 15 minutes or more I get a real loud backfire about 30 seconds after I shut the truck off. When it backfires, it’s out the exhaust, not through the carburetor. I do not get backfires any other time.

If I let it idle for a minute or two after fast driving, it sometimes does not do it but then again it sometimes does. That’s the only ignition problem I have with the truck. Other than that, it starts and drives normal.

Has anyone else had this issue? Do you think my manifold is just getting too hot and ignites the fuel vapors? If so, would a fan help cool it?

Thanks!
Tom
