I just logged in and had to scroll down to take a look at your post and all the resulting helpful replies!
While not sure about your sister, I'd recommend that you be packin' your banjo rather than any firearm while out in mountain lion country! First, in all the excitement of any situation possibly requiring the disposal of a big cat, you and most all of us are likely to miss the crucial shot! However, just a few licks from that ole' clawhammer and you'd have that cat headin' for the hills with its tail tucked 'tween its legs and mewin' like a kitty.
After 12 years living at our place, just a few weeks ago in a light fresh snow, we saw our first lion tracks. We've heard of sightings in the general region, but nothing first hand. We're just over the Rampart Range and a bit south of you, and that's well within the range of a mountain lion. Come to think of it, the tracks were headed your direction!!!
