How not to load a lowered motorcycle onto a pickup truck.

Using an aluminum channel with a steel plate that rests on the pickup bed, I rode the 1972 Electraglide up the ramp until the fame bottomed out on the ramp and cut the oil cooler line that ran under the frame.

With half the bike on the bed, the other half on the ramp, oil gushing out onto the ramp and parking lot, still in gear, only a hand brake to use, motor running, starting to slide down the oily ramp, I was finally able to lean to one side, kick the shifter lever into neutral, then take my hand off the clutch and turn off the ignition which is in the middle of the tanks.

After getting back on level ground, fixing the sliced hose, getting two 2"X12"s at 11' long to use as a ramp, I started my second approch thinking the ramp is flat enough and the bike won't bottom out.

So much for my thinking during this day.

Not only did the bike bottom out, the rear wheel kicked both ramps out and I found myself sitting on the bike while the bikes frame just in front of the rear tire settled precariuosly on the edge of the pickup bed.

Luckily, I was well balanced, side to side, front to back as long as I stayed on the bike. I kicked the bike in neutral and shut her off. I sat on the bike a while until help arrived in the form of two laughing out of control biker friends.

This happened in September 2007 after 26 years of riding and loading bikes.
