How do you tell?

I went and looked at a truck awhile back ago. It had alot of potential and the price was right. However I noticed the truck had lots of attachments for Gin pole use, a mico lever type brake lock, but noticeably the front brace on the winch was worn thru about half way from the cable use.
I passed on the unit because I felt the truck was well used.
I checked and it has been sold. What do you look for when you look at a PW?
