I was raised in an Air Force family. In 1964 we moved to Hickam AFB, adjacent to Pearl. As a kid I found it odd that so many buildings on the base still bore the marks from the Japanese machine guns as they straffed the base. When I asked why they didn't fix the buildings, my father replied "Because we don't want to forget what happened here".
