The ZDDP forms a protective coat on the cylinder wall and piston skirt. This Zinc-phosphate coating becomes volatile during combustion. The resulting components deposit themselves on the catalysts bed eventually forming another protective coating. This time the coating keeps the exhaust gasses from coming in contact with the precious metals of the catalyst. So overtime the catalyst efficiency will drop and indicate a failure. This is bad news to automotive manufactures that are federally mandated to warranty emissions thru 10 years/120,000 miles. Interestingly any scientific report I have ran across indicate that ZDDP increases engine component protection but it increases internal friction due to the phosphates….so why all the hype about increasing MPG using ZDDP? EPA is pushing to decrease the allowable .08ppm to .05 because they indicate a potentional for increased fuel economy. Rest assured lubrication companies will have proprietary additives to replace the ZDDP all it takes is $...our $$$.
