Two things; more HP and less drivetrain friction. There are some web sites that do amazing things with flatheads to increase the HP generated, but it does cost. That will help increase MPG. The single most important thing you can do to the PW drivetrain is to install freewheeling hubs on the front axle. Turning the front diff take a lot of power and costs MPG.

Consider: all the cost, how much you drive your truck, you might want to think about the following:

- Freshen the 230
- Install freewheeling hubs
- Install 5 speed O/D trans or 4.89 gears
- Make sure drivetrain components are adjusted properly
