I tend to adjust timing until the engine knocks when lugged down, and then back it off a hair. Partly that's to get better power and mileage, and partly because I usually either can't find the timing marks or there are a bunch of them and I can't figure out which ones to use. I'd like to have timing advance lever on the steering column like they did on the model A's. Then I could adjust it based on driving conditions and fuel quality. For example, cruising at a modest speed on a level highway, you can get away with a lot more advance than if climbing a hill.
