The Term Third Member, Differential, Pumpkin and Pig are understood when talking with other.

In the following Documents;
1967 Dodge Shop Manual ( including PW)
Power Wagon Owners Manual
TM-9-18008B
M37 TM ( I dont have the TM #)
The word Differential is always used, with no mention of Third Member.

TM-9-1808C Power Trains and Interchanges;
Military/Civilian Trucks 1941 to 1971 (Dodge)
The Third Member is described as;
"The Third Member is an assembly that bolts into the axle housing, and provides gear reduction and differential functions. The Complete 'Drop-Out' Assembly."

It appears that 'Third Member' was used by the Military during WWII and then dropped, with Differential becoming the Accepted Term. With that put to bed, the interesting question comes up that is NOT mentioned in any of the above official documents, no any other official or un-official document I have ever seen.

What is the First Member and the Second Member. If there is a Third Member, there must be a 1st and 2nd Member.

Help me sleep again.

Paul
