Actually it is where Father Marquette discovered the Mississippi River. There was an Indian village on the plain above the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin River. The Blackhawk Chief of the village name was Dog, however that was pronounced in Blackhawk language, hence the name. Still a few French Canadians about like myself, (ancestor of Farve and DuCharme)
