I'm not sure that you do have to change the bell to convert, but the flywheel/started remains the issue, with some bells. The bells have nearly the same external appearance but different internal casting pieces.
The "early Hemi"?? Which one? Every early Hemi was a completely different block, between the makes and sizes, getting the "correct one" can be quite confusing.
There is one size Hemi that does bolt up to the early, (59-60) 318 Poly with the long crank and 8 bolt crank, can't remember which one it is at the moment. Legend has it that the 318 grew out of either the 331 Dodge Hemi or the 270 Dodge Hemi, both may share the same block and bell bolt pattern as those two Hemi's.
The progression was 270H-277P-301P-318P, or 331H-277P-301P-318P, it depends upon whom you read....= )
All should have the same bell bolt pattern but different bells...
