I don't have my casting numbers book handy, but looking at the top of the transmission by the shift tower, you will see 4 vertical "pins" cast into the cover.
Those "pins" are above the 4 shift rails and the number of rails distinguishes the 540 5 speed and 541 5 speed overdrive, from the 420 and 435, which only have 3 shift rails.
Unfortunately it is also the same cover and case as the 433D, which is the 540 with 2nd gear removed, so if the tranny is the 540, but you can only find 4 gears, you have a 433D.
