The 383 will give you more torque per cubic inch than either the 400 or the 440.
How do you figure the 400 is easier to stroke? I can't imagine it getting any easier than the 383 was.
The 440 will probably withstand more abuse, but lets face it...both of these engines will run 1000HP at 8000rpm so I don't think either will have any trouble running 400hp at 4500rpm.
The 383 was known for its short stroke, high reving bore/stroke ratio. Putting in a longer stroke crank turns a 383 into a truck engine from a car engine.
I agree...a 440 will make more torque than a 383 if you stroke the 440 to 543ci....but a 440 stroked to 500ci...according to 440Source...will make more HP but less torque than the 496ci 383 stroker.
The 500ci 440 has a 4.15" stroke. The 496ci 383 has a 4.25" stroke with a smaller bore....which equals torque.
All this being said....if a W300 came with a 440...I'd be installing a 440 because either one will have way way more torque than I need Todd!
:)
