Good info! Thanks! I haven't opened up the cover on that rear end yet, the axle came off a 65 D200. I guess it could be a posi, hadn't thought of that yet, but one wheel would just sit there & spin in the mud. Could be a posi with shot clutches. That might account for the noise.
383 is probably the way to go...save a cup of fuel over the 440 when it's not dragging something around, plus, it's sitting right there. Sure looks like a bathroom in that great picture. An old engineer I used to work with would clean parts in his tub until his second (third?) wife made him quit.
