It would be easier for that spark to jump to the plugs, where it belongs. But if there is a crack, with some moisture in it, the spark will take the path of least resistance.
Look real close, clean the tower, look real close some more.
Is the coil hooked up backwards? Correct is (-) to the points, (+) to the ballast.
