You can shift a non-syncro (sliding gear) the same as a syncro at lower speeds. The faster you go before shifting the need to double clutch is greater, same for shifting down when slowing. You normally get wear on the gear tooth’s meshing side, but it's no concern due to the tooth's large surface area. The outward force from the non-syncro gears is absorbed by the trans case as opposed to the pushing force on shaft end caps in a syncro NP420 transmission. Wear on bearings is less in the non-syncro. The non-syncro is a simple and cheap trans to rebuild. The non-syncro produces gear whine 1st - 3rd due to the tooth cut and meshing of teeth where as helical gears do not produce it. My preference is the sliding gear transmission only because the whine of the gears seems to fit the truck’s era and Military heritage.
