Question on saving old rubber parts

Please forgive me for asking the question again, but I think I beat the refresh by about eight hours last time.

I have a ‘77’ M880 that we’re putting back together. The rubber bumpers under the hood are pretty hard. I know have read about efforts to soften old rubber. Seems I recall soaking in Oil of Wintergreen suggested somewhere. At the very least it might make the engine compartment smell nice. I’m pretty sure they are artificial rubber. Has anyone had any luck with saving 30 year old (or more) rubber parts?

(I know that 30 years seems hardly old and when I think about my WWII half tons the M880 becomes the “new” truck….)

Thanks!
