Mike,
First the locking pins need to come out. The manuals all go into great detail on unscrewing them, when I did mine they unscrewed pretty easily. I have heard of putting them in the freezer etc but I have never needed to do that. You can make a cap wrench out of a large piece of pipe with ears cut out to fit the cap.
Check out a manual, it will be a lot clearer than my ramblings!
