I've had no problems with inverters powering any kind of electronic equipment with AC to DC power supplies in them. The problem is mostly with things that have "phase control" variable power supplies like lamp dimmers and variable speed motor controls. Some will work in an on/off mode with the modified sine wave (but no variable speed). Others, like my Bosche roto-hammer, won't work at all. These things all work by slicing off a variable amount of the sine wave and giving it to the motor or light bulb. To work, they expect a waveform that goes up and down smoothly and steadily. A square wave is exactly the opposite of what they need. They do make true sine-wave inverters but they're very much more expensive and complicated than the common "modified sine wave" ones.
