Coming back to San Diego from Glamis over Mountain Springs Grade. 15 miles of 7%? 3,000 feet? Anyhow, the '41 panel truck was over loaded with dirt bikes, and had broken a rear spring at the front eye, so was dog-tracking. We could pull 3rd gear, at 25 mph. Hand throttle set, windshield open, feet out on the hood- the military windshield opens further. A huge Mayflower 18 wheeler going up also, he could pull a higher gear on the not-so-steep sections, and pass us. Then we'd pass him back on the steeper sections, still holding 25. Then the grade would lessen... Passing duel. 30 years ago, and I still don't like to be behind Mayflower trucks.
