No one hates war more than a soldier who has seen firsthand the overwhelming destruction and utterly senseless waste of WAR.

I had the same thought, that it is a shame that General Tibbets cannot be buried in a marked grave and honored as the man who helped end mankinds most destructive war. He would be safe and rest in peace under guard in Arlington, but his wishes should be our command.

I never met a WWII combatman faced with the invasion of Japan who didn't rejoice when the bombs were dropped.

I have always believed fervently that we saved countless lives on both sides. As far as loss of life, the firebomb raids on Tokyo with conventional incendiary bombs were far more destructive in terms of casualities and acreage ruined than either Hiroshima or Nagaskai.

What was so stunning was the idea that ONE single B-29 and one crew could wreak such devastation. We could have burned Japan to the ground with 1000 plane raids as we did, but we were also amazed to discover, after the war, that much of the critical operations were underground by 1945.

I've never believed that anyone knew that radiation would have such an after affect - after all, except for theory and one test in New Mexico, this was an un-proven weapon.

Some people condemn the USA for dropping The Bomb. That's easily said 50-60 years after the fact by people who weren't there. I wasn't, Paul Tibbets was and the reason why he was selected was that the Army felt that he was hands-down the best pilot in the air.

He was even sent to Witchita to hand-pick the B-29 that he wanted as it came down the assembly-line.

May he rest in peace with his comrades.

Let us never forget as we approach Veterans Day, that freedom isn't free. We aren't free due to the efforts of the politicians, it is the soldier, sailor, marine, coastie and AF
personnel that do the job 24/7 in damned uncomfortable places so that we can enjoy our Power Wagons.
